How To Access Palm Beach County Marital Records To See if Someone Is Married or Divorced
In Palm Beach County, public records can help individuals check if someone is married, verify if they have gone through a divorce, or even had a marriage annulled (meaning the marriage becomes legally nonexistent).
The preferred requesting method such as online, in person, or over the phone and whether or not someone needs a certified copy will dictate where to look for marriage and/or divorce records in Palm Beach County.
In summary, marital records can be viewed or obtained through:
- Palm Beach County Clerk of Court: Best for general online searches.
- Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics: Best for records that may have originated in another Florida County and for in-person or mail certified copies.
- VitalChek: Best for online certified copies.
Each method is detailed in the following sections.
View Online Marriage & Divorce Records at No Cost via the Palm Beach County Clerk of Court
The Palm Beach County Clerk of Court makes it quick and easy to view online marital records through their online search tools.
For divorce records, access their eCaseView portal, click on continue as “Guest,” select family/domestic relations as the court type, and then choose “dissolution” for the record type. This portal will also allow citizens to search for records pertaining to dating violence, child support, name changes, paternity and more.
On the other hand, marriage records can be found through their records search feature. From there, click on “document,” read and accept the terms and conditions if you desire, and then select “Marriage Record” for the document category. This feature allows individuals to search for domestic partnerships as well.
The clerk also has a genealogy page for those looking to track down family members.
Request Certificates of Marriage & Divorce Through the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics
The Florida Department of Health hosts several types of records that are accessible to the public, including both Palm Beach County marriage records and divorce records.8
The Florida Department of Health offers these records to the public through two options: either via the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics (by mail or in person) or via VitalChek, an online records request system that the health department has partnered with.9, 10
The department of health advises against ordering online records through any other companies or services, as these are not legitimate government entities and are not endorsed by the Department of Health.
Palm Beach County divorce records and marriage certificates ranging from June 6, 1927 to present that were filed with the Clerk of the Circuit Court will be issued through VitalChek or the Bureau of Vital Statistics.
But if these certificates were issued for divorces or marriages that occurred before June 6, 1927 they must be requested directly through the Palm Beach County Clerk of Circuit Court (or the relevant county clerk of court where the marriage license was granted or the divorce finalized).11
Certificates for marriages or divorces finalized less than 60 days ago must also be requested via the appropriate Clerk of the Circuit Court.
Both walk-in and mail-in services are offered by the Bureau of Vital Statistics, but requesters can expedite the service by downloading and filling out the relevant forms prior to visiting.
To request a copy of a Palm Beach County marriage or divorce certificate, interested parties can follow these steps:
- Complete a Florida Application for Marriage Certificate (Form DH261) or a Florida Application for Dissolution of Marriage Certificate (Form DH260) by filling in all relevant information on both yourself (the applicant) and the subjects of the search.12, 13
- Applicant details to include:
- Name
- Mailing Address
- Phone Number
- Relationship to Subject(s) of Search
- Signature
- Marriage/divorce record subject details to include:
- Name of Spouse(s) Prior to First Marriage
- Marriage License County of Issuance
- Place of Marriage (City/County)

- Submit Form DH261 and the appropriate payment in person or by mail
- Walk-ins: Pay by cash, Visa, Mastercard, or make out a check or money order payable to “Vital Statistics” and turn in your application to the following address Monday-Friday 8a.m.-4:30p.m.

Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics
P.O. Box 210
Jacksonville, FL 32231-0042
Processing of searches often takes 3-5 business days excluding shipping time, but searches for records prior to 1970 often take additional time. The Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics can be reached by phone at 904.359.6900 ext. 9000.
Acquire Marital & Divorce Records Online via VitalChek
Individuals seeking marriage and/or divorce records in Palm Beach County can also do so electronically via VitalChek, with the option to have certificates delivered directly to your home.10
The Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics does not recommend or partner with any other online service for obtaining records, but VitalChek keeps user information confidential and is safe to use.
Users of this service who would like to order marriage or divorce certificates can follow these steps:
- Navigate to VitalChek and click “Get Started Now”10
- Choose the type of certificate(s) you would like to purchase
- Select the state (in this case, Florida) where the marriage license was issued or the divorce was granted
- Type or select the name of the city from the dropdown menu
- Enter the date that the marriage or divorce became official
- Select the reason for the record request (adoption, government assistance, housing, inheritance, insurance, legal purposes, personal use, or for social security benefits)
- Enter personal information for yourself and the subjects of the record (i.e. date of birth, name, relationship to subjects) and enter your electronic signature
- Pay the $22 fee ($15 Florida Bureau of Statistics fee and rush fee, plus $7 VitalChek processing fee) by American Express, Discover, Mastercard, or Visa
- Order and pay for additional copies if needed ($4 each)
- If notified that additional forms of identification are needed to verify your identity, follow VitalChek’s instructions for uploading to their portal
Certificates will be delivered by USPS, or via UPS shipping if requested; however, added fees are charged to those who opt for UPS and a signature is required upon delivery for this method.
Requesters who wish to purchase their certificates by phone–or who have questions about the VitalChek process–can direct their calls to +1(877)550.7330.14
Another option for obtaining marriage and divorce records is through third party services or platforms that can check if someone is married or divorced on a national scale instead of only giving results at the local or state level. These services can even give insight into records that are not publicly available and check for aliases as well.
Lastly, searchers looking for records that cannot be found through VitalChek or the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics can review documents hosted by churches as they often kept older marriage records that could be used to confirm a marriage or even to help trace genealogy.

How To Request Criminal Records Through the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (Florida)
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) Public Records Portal can be utilized to search through criminal police records held by the PBSO Central Records Division.5, 4
Users can create an account or simply conduct the search as a guest, but guests should maintain their search confirmation number(s) as they will not be able to receive correspondence or be updated on the status of their record without an account. Prices will vary depending upon copies purchased.
In person inquiries and requests for Palm Beach County criminal records may be made at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) headquarters at the following address.1
Palm Beach County Sheriff Office
3228 Gun Club Rd.
West Palm Beach, Florida 33406
Phone: 561.688.3000
Similarly, cities such as Boca Raton can also fulfill records requests at the local level–often through police reports or motor vehicle reports–but these will not be comprehensive criminal records or show arrests, charges, or convictions on the state scale.20, 21
How To Access Florida Criminal Records via State Resources
Searchers seeking criminal records in Florida can obtain statewide criminal reports which will provide much broader and more extensive criminal history information than the local records.22
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Division of Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) offers a couple of different ways to obtain a State of Florida Criminal History Record Check to requesters for a $24 fee each.23, 24
Individuals can either conduct an Instant Search Online with immediate results available for printing or email delivery (in which records will not be certified), or request a Certified or Non-Certified Search in which the requester must enter their mailing address and relevant information on the search subject before FDLE staff conducts a thorough search.25, 26
This second type of search can either be notarized (certified) with a processing time of 6-7 business days or non-certified with a slightly quicker turnaround time of 5 business days (excluding mail delivery time via USPS).
Instant searches will be subject to a separate and additional $1 credit card processing fee; costs of both instant and certified searches are payable by debit or credit card.
Individuals may also request their own Personal Criminal History Review to ensure that it is accurate or simply for their own records.27
This is a free criminal record check but will not be certified and can only be obtained once requesters submit the completed form along with an official fingerprint card to the FDLE. Fingerprints can be taken by any authorized police department or law enforcement agency but will come at an additional cost set by the agency.
A personal review will not be accepted for professional certification, immigration, licensing, or employment purposes.
Once an official 8 x 8 standard fingerprint card has been completed and the personal criminal history review form is fully and legibly filled out, applicants can mail both of these documents to:
Florida Department of Law Enforcement
Attn: Criminal History Record Maintenance Section
Post Office Box 1489
Tallahassee, FL 32302-1489
Those who find discrepancies or wish to dispute information in their criminal records may do so by emailing [email protected] or calling the Criminal History Maintenance Section of the FDLE at 850.410.7898.
Criminal history details may also be found via the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC)–which manages all state prisons–for current inmates and probationers.28 Searchers may utilize the DOC’s online Corrections Offender Network for free or hard copies of DOC public records can be obtained for a small fee, often just $0.15 per page.29
The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) will show historical data for prior offenders from each state, even if the state does not host any federal correctional facilities.31
The BOP inmate locator can help searchers find past criminal information on subjects who are currently incarcerated in federal prison.32
Lastly, criminal information will be available to interested parties via the FDLE’s Sexual Offenders & Predators Search which shows statewide information, or on a national scale via the National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW).33, 34 Both of these search tools are publicly accessible, free to use, and searchable by name or location.
How To Perform a Background Check in Palm Beach County FL
Background checks may be performed for either personal or professional reasons, and the purpose behind the check dictates which laws must be followed.
Personal background checks can be conducted by members of the public such as in the case of researching a certain acquaintance or potential date and wanting to look into their past employment and criminal history, or for any other personal reasons.
In these cases, consent from the subject of the background check is not needed but information found in the background check report cannot be used to stalk, harass, or commit hate crimes. Third party services prove very useful in efficiently compiling relevant information on a subject.
Background checks conducted for professional reasons such as licensing, professional certification, housing, or purchasing of firearms require the knowledge and written permission of the individual being investigated.
The state of Florida is the only state that specifies only two types of background checks: “Level 1” background checks as name-based checks and “Level 2” checks as fingerprint-based checks conducted at the national level via the FBI.
Level 1 checks have a greater margin of error due to potential misspellings or skewed search results due to duplicated or similar names, but fingerprint-based Level 2 background checks are highly accurate and more reliable.
Level 1 background checks are commonly used by employers, landlords, and licensing agencies while Level 2 checks tend to be required for employment involving close work with children or the elderly, healthcare positions, adoption applications, and some c-level positions.
When conducting professional background checks whether Level 1 or 2, those performing the investigation must abide by all local, state and federal laws.
These include the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) which protects consumer information and laws enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) which protect applicants, trainees, and employees from discrimination based on age, race, religion, sex, gender identity, disabilities, and other characteristics.35, 36
Local name-based background checks may be conducted via the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) Central Records Division, but will be restricted to information from Palm Beach County arrest records only.4 Individuals who choose to use this service can do so by following these steps:
- Navigate to the PBSO Public Records Portal and click the box labeled “Public Records”5
- On the following page, click “Background Check”
- Type in all relevant search criteria into the online form (i.e. the subject’s name, date of birth, aliases, address, race, sex, and a description of the request)
- Select your preferred local background check delivery method (electronic, postal mail, in person pick-up, or on-site inspection)
- Upload any files that may be relevant to or assist with the background check (optional)
- Click “Submit” at the bottom of the page
The Records Division does not give a turnaround time for these background check requests, but assures requesters that they strive to deliver reports in a timely manner. Requesters may benefit from knowing that this local background check through the PBSO will not include juvenile information, state or federal information, or any records from other agencies.
The FDLE offers a State and National Criminal History Record Check that requires fingerprints to be taken through any authorized LiveScan Providers and submitted to the FBI for verification. However, this option is only available through official governmental agencies.38, 39
The final option for obtaining Florida background checks is through a $24 State of Florida Criminal History Record Check, available instantly online for an additional $1 credit or debit processing fee or by requesting that FDLE employees conduct the search and return information within 5-7 business days.22, 24

To look up warrants throughout the state, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Wanted Persons Search can be performed via the electronic Public Access System (PAS).42
Search criteria including the subject’s name, nickname/alias, age, race, sex, and date of birth can be entered. Once the search is performed, any profile can be clicked to find more information such as the date the warrant was issued, the warrant number, offense, and reporting agency.
The FDLE warns that some information might not be complete or up to date and that the appropriate law enforcement or reporting agency should be contacted for confirmation of an active warrant.
Some warrants–especially search warrants or warrants that might risk compromising an ongoing investigation–could be partially or fully withheld from the public and will not be accessible through any of these means.

In Florida, each level of the judicial system plays a particular role and the higher level courts also provide public court documents. The top level is the Florida Supreme Court, followed by the District Courts of Appeal; these constitute the appellate courts. The next layers are the trial courts: 20 judicial circuit courts and then the state’s 67 county courts.
The responsibilities of each are outlined briefly below:
Supreme Court: The highest court in Florida, the Supreme Court hosts 7 judges that each serve 6 year terms. This court has the final say over all legal matters and holds authority over the other state courts.
The Florida Supreme Court Online Docket can be searched by the public for information on non-confidential briefs, petitions, and dispositional orders.51 This free public records search is updated every 15 minutes and can be searched by case number, party or attorney, and dates or cases filed.
District Courts of Appeal: The 6 District Courts serve to review decisions made by the lower courts; cases from the trial courts are often resolved here unless sent back to the original courts or elevated to the Supreme Court for a final ruling.
Individuals in Palm Beach County can search for specific case documents and court records through the Fourth District Court of Appeals Online Docket.52
Circuit Courts: Handles felony criminal cases, domestic relations, mental health, guardianship, juvenile delinquency, and civil cases. The circuit courts also hear appeals from the lower county courts. Records can be obtained either via eCaseView or the Clerk & Comptroller.
County Courts: One per county, these are often considered “the people’s courts” and involve civil disputes, misdemeanors, and smaller monetary disputes. In Palm Beach County, the Main Courthouse serves as the circuit and county courthouse.
At the federal level, court case records can be viewed or obtained for a small fee through the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) or–for paper records prior to 1999–through the court that heard the case or by visiting one of the Federal Record Centers. 53, 54 The National Archives also provide court case records ranging from $35-90 and can be ordered in person or delivered by mail.55
