How To View Prison Mugshots: Florida State & Federal Inmates

If they’re currently serving time in a state prison rather than in the county jail, then it may be possible to obtain mugshots of inmates via state-level databases or offices, as county-level sources will not yield those results even if the offender used to live locally.

Access this information through the Florida Department of Corrections, which hosts an inmate search tool with access to information on prisoners, as well as their mugshots.10 Note that the first name, last name, or DC number is required in the search criteria.

Searching for an inmate will provide the following information: name, birth date, sex, race, DC number, initial receipt date, facility, custody, current release date, confinement status, visitation status, current prison sentence history, detainers, incarceration history, and prior prison history.

A screenshot shows search results with data such as mugshots, name, DC number, race, sex, release date, current facility and birth date from the Florida Department of Corrections website.

If the inmate is currently in a federal prison, you can use the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.11 Keep in mind though that mugshots are not public. You will need either the BOP (Bureau of Prisons) register number, DCDC number, FBI number or INS number when performing a search by number.

On the other hand, use the person’s first or last name when doing a search by name. Race, age, and sex can be added to narrow the search. This is the data that’s displayed when conducting the search — name, register number, age, race, sex and release date.

Conducting a Palm Beach County mugshot search can be a quick and effective process, thanks to several public portals that now provide access to these records. They’re provided courtesy of the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Florida Public Information Statutes.12

Mugshots and other inmate records must not be used for the purposes of stalking, threatening, or intimidating people, nor for professional reasons according to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), as it is administered by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), nor used in opposition to any other local, state, or federal laws.13
